Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon sourdough starter
  • 4 cups + 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 fresh garlic cloves (minced)
  • 2 teaspoons fine salt
  • Olive oil (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter, flour, and water; let sit for 30 minutes.
  2. Add remaining ingredients to form a soft dough; knead for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  3. Allow the dough to rise in a greased bowl covered with a damp cloth for 1-2 hours or until doubled.
  4. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Punch down the risen dough and divide into 12 pieces; shape each into an 8-inch rope and tie into knots.
  5. Melt butter in a saucepan; add minced garlic and sauté briefly. Brush this mixture over the knots before baking.
  6. Bake for about 20 minutes until golden brown; cool slightly and brush with more garlic butter.
