  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/3 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup canned pure pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk or heavy cream
  • 2 large eggs, divided
  • 1 cup powdered sugar for glaze
  • 1 tablespoon canned pure pumpkin puree for glaze
  • 1 tablespoon milk for glaze
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon for glaze

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and brown sugar until combined.
  3. Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together pumpkin puree, buttermilk (or cream), and eggs until smooth.
  5. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined.
  6. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and shape it into a circle about one inch thick; cut into wedges or rounds.
  7. Place on the prepared baking sheet and brush with beaten egg for shine.
  8. Bake for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.
